Inspiring Parks: Pt. 1

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods…”

Nothing is more inspiring than Nature.  I’ve lost hours to google,  constantly on the hunt for interesting and inspiring photoshoot locations and scenery, and beautiful new places to discover.  In February, I explored 5 national parks throughout California, ranging from prehistoric lakes to alpine forests.  I kicked off a month of exploration in a place close to home–Angeles National Forest.  While not exactly a new destination for me (see Sunday Safari), it’s landscape is vast and changes dramatically from one mile to the next. With a picnic in tow, I explored the eastern range of the mountains, complete with towering pines and rustic bridges in golden afternoon light.  A perfect spot if I ever choose to revisit our ‘Little Red Riding Hood‘ campaign.

TREND TUESDAY: Oversized Bows

Today’s trend: Oversize Bows. As seen on the cover and inside the current issue of Brides Magazine, oversized bows are having a moment.  Not only do they add a punch of unexpected drama with the right placement, but if you select a gown featuring a self-tying bow, like the Lauren Elaine Briarleigh, you can create the shape and look you prefer –from big and voluminous to loose and draped.

TREND TUESDAY: 3-D Flowers

In the spirit of the New Year, we’re introducing new weekly themes to the blog! Today, I’m happy to be kicking off ‘Trend Tuesday’ – a weekly post highlighting timely trends in bridal fashion.

Today’s trend: 3-D Flowers. As seen in the current issue of Brides Magazine, currently on newsstands, up the luxe in your bridal look with textured flowers. Whether on the neckline, hemline, or even added to a veil or headpiece, texture is always exciting and decadent, and lace flowers keep the effect feminine and touchable.

Many of the newest Lauren Elaine Bridal gowns are peppered with our signature, 3-D french corded lace hand embroidered flowers – including the new Gardenia, Aurelia, Ivy, Aurora, and even the soon-to-be released Margaret dress from the upcoming “Reception Collection.” Lauren Elaine Bridal Brides Magazine Review

If you’re keeping your gown look sleek but want a pop of floral, experiment with a textured hair accessory like the “Empress” headpiece (available by special order, salesrep@lauren-elainedesigns.com, see below.)

Epilogue: Lisa’s Victorian Violette

Vintage inspirations are prevalent in many of our bridal gowns, from silhouettes and fabrications, to finishing techniques and embellishments.  Additionally, many of the brides we work with are quick to describe their wedding theme as vintage-inspired.  While vintage inspiration can take many forms,  I truly fell in love with these dreamy images from beautiful bride Lisa.  Not only did she make for one stunning bride, but her Victorian venue was such a perfect compliment to the vintage-inspired Victorian lace and feminine details of her “Violette” gown.  I also adore her use of  color (the red shoes!) and her spot-on styling. Here’s a look at some of the images from her wedding at the Top O’Woodland Historic Inn in Nashville, TN,  photographed by Suzi Daggs.

“I absolutely loved this dress, and it was perfect for the venue and feel of the wedding.” – Lisa

Inspiration Orientation

I get inspiration from just about everything– places I’ve visited, movies, music, nature…the list goes on.  As inspiration is such a huge part of my world, I’ve decided to make a change.  Can you see/guess what it is? …As you may have noticed, the name of the blog has changed! And over the course of the next week or so, we’ll be making some other additions and modifications to the blog and the layout in the spirit of this theme.

Just as every fairytale begins with ‘Once upon a time…” — every creation of mine starts with a seam.  But more meaningful to me is the inspiration behind the seams, and what inspires every design, collection, photograph and fashion film from the very beginning. I love reading and seeing the inspiration behind other artists’ work, just as I enjoy sharing mine. Inspiration is a story, and you can read all of my stories on ‘Once Upon a Seam.’

One of my biggest sources of inspiration is travel – and visiting new places.  While I frequently trade Los Angeles for a change of scenery in Big Bear,  it’s not exactly a “new place”- as it’s more like a second home. However, on a recent trip I did a little exploring  of the town of Fawnskin, CA–nestled on the other side of Big Bear Lake.  As you enter the rustic town square, it’s hard to miss the massive and seemingly abandoned Fawn Lodge.  Today it looks like a wild-west inspired saloon, but apparently it wasn’t always that way (it even holds a deep dark secret.) I love it’s kitschy look, and it helped inspired the wild west cowboys and indians theme and concept of our 2014 SWIM campaign film, shot entirely in Big Bear.  While exploring, I paired the western-inspired “Polly” dress from ‘Laine by Lauren Elaine’ with a chunky wool cardigan, tights, and my favorite boots. Gingham can be a go-to year round with the right layering.

Summer Magic

Old Disney technicolor classics have always been a favorite of mine. At the top of my list is ‘Summer Magic’ –namely because I love Hayley Mills, and I’ve always coveted her wardrobe from the film. When I attended the launch party for TNT cosmetics last week, I wore a tiered chantilly lace dress inspired by Nancy’s (Hayley Mills) frilly yellow frock from the film’s final scenes. While the dress is available in White and Ivory color options through Lauren Elaine Bridal, my original design pays homage to the 1963 costume in a summery lemon hue.

Spring Florals

Tomorrow is Easter, and in my world of fashion that means two things: First, it’s officially appropriate to break out the White (although here in California that’s a silly, outdated “rule” that I never ever follow.) And second– it’s time for a spring floral overload.  Easter and florals go hand and hand, and with everything coming up roses, here’s a look at a floral-inspired fashion editorial that I’ve fallen in love with.  A good floral print dress is timeless, but combining florals with feathers and pastels and lady-like shapes is inspired and ethereal.

The Mist and Powder

In the spirit of the much anticipated (and blogged about!) MALEFICENT, I thought I’d share this newly discovered editorial obsession: ‘The Mist and the Powder,’ photographed (and styled) by Natalie Shau and Hideo, and featuring models Solveiga amd Gabriele. I can’t get enough of the gorgeous color treatment in this series, and the styling and contrast between light and dark is just magical. Enjoy.
