Inspiring Parks: Pt. 1

“There is a pleasure in the pathless woods…”

Nothing is more inspiring than Nature.  I’ve lost hours to google,  constantly on the hunt for interesting and inspiring photoshoot locations and scenery, and beautiful new places to discover.  In February, I explored 5 national parks throughout California, ranging from prehistoric lakes to alpine forests.  I kicked off a month of exploration in a place close to home–Angeles National Forest.  While not exactly a new destination for me (see Sunday Safari), it’s landscape is vast and changes dramatically from one mile to the next. With a picnic in tow, I explored the eastern range of the mountains, complete with towering pines and rustic bridges in golden afternoon light.  A perfect spot if I ever choose to revisit our ‘Little Red Riding Hood‘ campaign.

Holiday Road

Oh how I love a good road trip.  Maybe it’s the change of scenery, or maybe it’s the drawn out anticipation of the destination. When it comes to traveling, I’d happily trade a day on the road, inspired by new landscapes, for a few hours in the sky.  Road trips are not only an American tradition, but when it comes to the holidays, road trips are just as much a tradition as decorations and presents.  To Grandmother’s [ or insert family member’s] house we go… LaurenElaineHolidayRoad4

I kicked off this holiday season with a road trip into high altitude and cooler temps for Thanksgiving.  And next week,  I’ll be road-tripping to Las Vegas for a project I’ve been dreaming up for a while.  I’m exciting to be launching a new collection of tea-length, 1950’s inspired bridal dresses geared towards receptions, rehearsals, showers, and unconventional weddings.  They’re fun to wear, and made for celebrating.  I love it when brides break away from tradition when it comes to their weddings – whether it’s the location or the gown.  And so I thought, what  better place to capture the nontraditional, fun, and flirty retro feel of the new collection than Vegas, and all it’s neon glory!  I can’t wait to head out on a road trip through the Mojave desert  to bring this vision to life– behind-the-seams blog post to follow!!LaurenElaineHolidayRoad8LaurenElaineHolidayRoad1LaurenElaineHolidayRoad2LaurenElaineHolidayRoad7LaurenElaineHolidayRoad5

Inspiration Orientation

I get inspiration from just about everything– places I’ve visited, movies, music, nature…the list goes on.  As inspiration is such a huge part of my world, I’ve decided to make a change.  Can you see/guess what it is? …As you may have noticed, the name of the blog has changed! And over the course of the next week or so, we’ll be making some other additions and modifications to the blog and the layout in the spirit of this theme.

Just as every fairytale begins with ‘Once upon a time…” — every creation of mine starts with a seam.  But more meaningful to me is the inspiration behind the seams, and what inspires every design, collection, photograph and fashion film from the very beginning. I love reading and seeing the inspiration behind other artists’ work, just as I enjoy sharing mine. Inspiration is a story, and you can read all of my stories on ‘Once Upon a Seam.’

One of my biggest sources of inspiration is travel – and visiting new places.  While I frequently trade Los Angeles for a change of scenery in Big Bear,  it’s not exactly a “new place”- as it’s more like a second home. However, on a recent trip I did a little exploring  of the town of Fawnskin, CA–nestled on the other side of Big Bear Lake.  As you enter the rustic town square, it’s hard to miss the massive and seemingly abandoned Fawn Lodge.  Today it looks like a wild-west inspired saloon, but apparently it wasn’t always that way (it even holds a deep dark secret.) I love it’s kitschy look, and it helped inspired the wild west cowboys and indians theme and concept of our 2014 SWIM campaign film, shot entirely in Big Bear.  While exploring, I paired the western-inspired “Polly” dress from ‘Laine by Lauren Elaine’ with a chunky wool cardigan, tights, and my favorite boots. Gingham can be a go-to year round with the right layering.

Walking in a November Wonderland

Southern California hasn’t seen rain in what feels like a year!  While Los Angeles was treated to much needed showers…in Big Bear Lake, CA, I got to experience precipitation in its most magical form–SNOW!!  I came up to the mountains a few days ago to spend Halloween and enjoy a long weekend/creative retreat after a busy October, and this early snowfall was nature’s icing on the cake!  After frolicking in this November wonderland, I spent the day curled up by a blazing fire, sipping hot cocoa, and looking over photos from a recent shoot we did last week for Lauren Elaine Bridal.  A perfect Saturday. Happy November, everyone!

Fall Florals

While it may technically be Fall,  in Southern California it still feels very much like summer. And although I’m desperate to break out the plaids, faux fur, and houndstooth, I couldn’t help but gravitate towards florals when picking a dress for my cousin’s recent wedding brunch in Montecito, CA.  With temps in the 80s, the jewel-toned “Petunia” dress from LAINE by Lauren Elaine not only felt appropriate for the event, but also for exploring the picturesque 1920s historical home that accommodated my family for the wedding weekend.

Hello October!

“I’m so glad I live in a world where there are Octobers.” – Anne of Green Gables

October in Big Bear Lake, Designer Lauren Elaine, Fall Fashion

If Fall is my favorite season of the year, then October is my favorite month. Happy October 1st! While I’m busy prepping for our upcoming LA Fashion Week event coming up later in the month– this week, I’m soaking in the cooler temps and changing leaves up in the mountains of Big Bear, CA, where Fall is officially in full swing.

Fall Festivities

Today marks the official 1st day of Fall–and the start of my absolute favorite season of the entire year. Maybe it’s because my birthday’s in November, or maybe it’s the anticipation of the Holiday Season, but when Fall rolls around, I can’t help but get excited. This year, I’m combining a little bit of my own love for fall (Halloween in particular) into our event for Los Angeles Fashion Week (LAFW).  Halloween, much like Fashion, allows for dressing up and transforming into someone else. Since I’ll be showing my bridal collection this season, and given LAFW’s October calendar, we’ve decided to liven things up with an event that combines both fashion and All Hallow’s Eve. Inspired by movies like ‘The Bride of Frankenstein” and ” The Corpse Bride”, we’ll be hosting an ‘All Bridal’s Eve’ reception featuring inspired installations with the new Lauren Elaine Bridal line, along with spirited cocktails. While costumes will not be required, an appreciation for all things Fall and spooky will be.
