I love a great resort. It’s probably the first thing I consider when planning a vacation or getaway- even more so than the destination. And if I’m being honest, I often find that my absolute favorite escapes, and the vacations that are most relaxing, are those that don’t even require leaving the property.
Enter Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa. Growing up in San Diego, I’ve “staycationed” at some wonderful spots, but when deciding on a romantic “annual honeymoon” getaway destination with my husband, I knew I truly wanted to experience the best of what San Diego has to offer. And that’s Rancho Valencia in Rancho Santa Fe.
What makes this 5 star property so special? Everything really. The personalized service, hospitality, and attention to detail is unreal. From the moment you enter through the resort’s gates, you’re addressed by name. Haiku’s and turndown treats (think artisanal truffles and essential oil mists for your shower) are left bedside, and fresh squeezed orange juice is delivered daily, before you wake, outside your villa door (I’m not even a juice person, but I’m already looking forward to it on my next stay). Daily guest calendars are provided with curated activities (think yoga classes, tequila tastings, champagne lancing lessons…). It’s these extra little touches that make a stay so special and completely indulgent.
Of course the resort itself is incredible, a private sanctuary in San Diego. Each suite, or “villa” resembles a private home, with the refined Spanish style decor and oversized spa bathrooms, and gorgeous outdoor patios (our favorite suite has a private jacuzzi and outdoor fireplace.) The expansive grounds are worthy of morning hikes and sunset strolls (or a game of croquet on the lawn.)
Now. Let’s talk about The Spa.
Think Spanish mission meets Garden of Eden. This is my ABSOLUTE favorite amenity at Rancho Valencia (and as a resort guest, spa privileges are complimentary). From Eucalyptus steam rooms, to a wonderful pre/post treatment circuit that includes a sauna/steam/cold plunge/hot jacuzzi soak- all outdoors- under palm trees, in the perfect San Diego weather — it’s heaven. If you’re into working out on vacation – a stay also includes fantastic fitness classes and use of the tennis courts and multiple resort pools. But I prefer to live at the spa.
If you’re looking for a romantic and relaxing getaway, anniversary retreat, or a honeymoon destination that feels both totally private, and completely indulgent, Rancho Valencia Resort and Spa is one of my all time favorite destinations. The only downside? Rancho Valencia itself is just so special – you’ll never want to leave the property and explore what else San Diego has to offer.
I can’t wait to be back soon, and celebrate another anniversary here!
